Every year forty library students are chosen to assist ALA staff during
the ALA Annual Conference. In exchange for working, students receive free conference registration, housing, and a per
diem for meal expenses. During free time, students may attend programs
and participate in other conference activities. This year's Annual
Conference will be held in Chicago, IL from July 9-15, 2008.

To qualify for the ALA student to staff program, students must be
enrolled in GSLIS at the time of the conference, a student chapter
member and current ALA member, and cannot have previously participated
in the program. If you are not a current ALA member, you can still
apply but must join ALA if selected as the nominee.

GSLIS will reimburse the student nominee for the cost of round trip
ground transportation from Champaign-Urbana to Chicago. If a LEEP
student is selected, GSLIS will reimburse the nominee for the cost of
round trip economy airfare (not to exceed $500) if ground
transportation options are not reasonable.

If you qualify and would like to apply for the program, please
complete the online application by December 1, 2008.

Submissions will be blind reviewed by the ALA Student Chapter
Board at GSLIS and scored based on the statement, involvement, and professional
goals.

Dr. Daniel Headrick: Telecommunications and Imperialism: Double Edge Sword

Lecture Abstract: When the colonial powers introduced telegraphs to and within their colonial empires, they did so in large part to tighten the control of the metropoles over their colonies and that of the colonial governments over their subjects. Telecommunications had another effect, however, namely it spread the news from distant places, thereby stimulating new ideas that threatened to undermine the colonial status quo. The hopes that the imperialists placed in the controlling powers of telecommunication have so far proved to be misplaced.

Speaker Biography: Dr. Daniel Headrick is an international telecommunications historian and Professor Emeritus at Roosevelt University. He is the author of several publications, including The Tentacles of Progress: Technology Transfer in the Age of Imperialism, 1850-1940 (1991), When Information Came of Age: Technologies of Knowledge in the Age of Reason and Revolution, 1700-1850 (2000), and the forthcoming Power Over Peoples: Technology, Environments, and Western Imperialism, 1400 to the Present. He earned a Ph.D. in History from Princeton University in 1971.

Dr. Daniel Headrick is speaking as part of the "Information in Society" speaker series.

Windsor Lecture: Ian Wilson

Dr. Ian Wilson, librarian and archivist of Canada, will deliver the Fall 2008 Windsor Lecture.

Abstract

Dr Wilson will begin his speech with a discussion of how the globalization of information affects cultural identity. In this context, he will explain how important it will be in the future to have guides we can rely on to select and organize the massive volume of information now available to us. This will lead into a discussion of the new role of librarians, archivists, and information professionals in selecting, organizing, and identifying information, and tie back into the ways our cultural identity will be shaped by how information is identified and communicated. Using language as one key aspect of cultural identity, he will discuss the example of how librarians in Nunavut are working to make information available in Inuktitut, linking information, identity, and the role of libraries and archives. Next he will discuss the role of integration in cultural identity--and how the merger of the library and the archives has permitted the collective imagination (identity) of a nation to be preserved. This will lead into the ways the web and new technologies used by libraries and archives create meaning from various media and allow us to tell stories to a 21st century audience, especially with the trend towards a more oral, verbal culture. In terms of the Library and Archives Canada?s experience, Dr. Wilson will go on to discuss the ways we can re-package the stories that contain the elements of our cultural identity, and the new ways we can reach out to citizens. One of the most important ways we do this is by digitizing content, another knowledge activity that affects cultural identity. He will describe the importance of the Canadian Digital Information Strategy and the Canada Project, leading into how our approach to our history, and our self-knowledge as a country, has changed dramatically. Talking about history in the first person and the place of history in the age of Wikipedia and Facebook, he will then move on to the role of history in cultural identity. This will be framed by a general discussion of the participatory nature of knowledge in the 21st century, and how the shifts from oral to written culture, and written to web culture, have affected the ways we think and learn, and how knowledge organizations can tap into this rich intellectual springboard. He will conclude with some interesting projections into the future for libraries and archives.
